Frequently Asked Questions
What is Black Oxide?
Black Oxide is a coating created by a chemical reaction that takes place on the surface of the metal. This process converts the surface of the metal to magnetite (Fe3O4). It is used to add mild corrosion resistance, for appearance, and to minimize light reflection, and aid in break-in lubricity.
What applications are not suitable?
Our mid temp black oxide is not currently suitable for stainless steels. Our black oxide finish cannot be applied to over plated parts; zinc, nickel, chromium, cadmium, and phosphate. Plating must be stripped prior to process. This coating does not exhibit a smoothing effect, preexisting surface defects may still be visible after finishing.
What current specs do you meet?
We are compliant on all Standard Black Oxide Specs, on all iron and non-stainless steels. Mil Spec and RoHS compliant.
MIL-DTL-13924 E class 1, AMS 2485, ASTM D769, ISO 11408
What type of post treatments do you apply?
All products receive a "dry to touch" oil coating during the final finish process. This is non-dimensional at 1 micron thick. Black oxide has a porous crystal structure, this acts as an excellent base for protective oil coating, allowing the steel to hold more oil. This protects critical surfaces in storage, shipment, and startup.
What are your size restrictions?
We utilize a 1 ton lift to accommodate large and heavy pieces. Our current tank size is 24”x 48”x 28.5”. We are willing to try to find solutions if needed for larger dimensions. Please inquire for more information if needed.
What are the rates of your services?
Our rate per pound is industry standard. We do offer a lower, new customer pricing, than many competitors. Ask about a free, new customer sample, on a product 10lbs or less. We will accept a range of order sizes.
